First traffic light with artificial intelligence (awareAI) in operation in Linz

Increased safety for scholars

Yunex Traffic has modernized one of the oldest signaling systems in the city of Linz, Upper Austria. The first traffic light, which is additionally controlled by artificial intelligence, went into operation near the regional school center for the hearing and visually impaired.

The new system replaces the old system components from 1985, and the new high-tech, low-energy technology will continue to ensure a safe route to school for decades to come.

Mobility Manager and Deputy Mayor of Linz, Martin Hajart, says: “Following the installation of a contactless traffic light in road Landwiedstra├če in the area of the school Ramsauerschule, the city of Linz is now setting another example in terms of intelligent traffic technology.”

Yunex Traffic awareAI is a camera system with artificial intelligence for detecting, classifying and tracking road users.

At this traffic light, pedestrians receive a green light without having to touch the traffic light as before, and the green time is automatically extended if necessary. This is possible thanks to this digital sensor technology.

The awareAI system by Yunex Traffic recognizes road users after the training phase with the integrated deep learning algorithms and classifies them. For example, it detects whether the person is a child, a wheelchair user or a group of people. The system can also detect if the pedestrians want to cross the protective path or if they are just walking past the intersection. Larger groups or slower pedestrians are detected by virtual speed tracking, and the duration of green phases is adjusted as needed. This ensures higher safety and provides more comfort for citizens with special needs.

The connection of the new high-tech system is made via the central, traffic-related data network of the city of Linz. In a secured data network, traffic data including operating and status data are transmitted via wide-range modems (fiber optics and data lines) at up to 1 GB/s to optimize traffic processes.

All detection processes are carried out within the local evaluation unit and only completely anonymized information is optionally processed externally. This offers the highest level of data protection.
