The future on Austria’s motorways

Our new Yunex Traffic Roadside Unit 2X (RSU2X) is being mounted on Austria’s roads since end of May 2021. ASFINAG (Highway and Motorway Financing Corporation in Austria) is one of the first customers of the new, intelligent product series to further increase the already high safety standard on Austria’s highways. We talked to Patrick Wunderl, Service Manager C-ITS at ASFINAG.

What makes the new Yunex Traffic RSU2X an innovation for ASFINAG?

“For the first time, the new RSU2X offers the possibility of sending safety-relevant traffic information, such as road works or congestion warnings, directly to the vehicle in real time. This will further increase the already high safety standards on Austria’s highways using state-of-the-art digital tools,” says Patrick Wunderl. “Thanks to real-time communication with vehicles, the RSU2X offers the possibility of optimizing the flow of traffic by identifying hazardous situations at an early stage and proactively taking measures to reduce congestion. This not only protects our customers, but also our employees who are on duty along the route.”

According to Wunderl, the most important performance features in road operations include reliability in operation, high availability, durability, future-proof IT architecture and flexibility. That’s exactly what the new Yunex Traffic RSU2X offers. The optimized design of the RSU2X promises a long service life, remote maintenance options and a large transmission range of the internal antennas. With the possibility to use SIM cards as data connection, the RSU2X offers the required flexibility to provide C-ITS service even in remote regions. The connection to the central unit via VPN also contributes significantly to the required security.

Where will the new RSU2X be in operation?

To optimize traffic flow on roads with increased traffic volumes, 150 RSU2X have been mounted in the Vienna area, along the A1 via Linz to Salzburg, and at Austria’s borders. This represents the Austrian part of the European C-ITS corridor from Rotterdam via Frankfurt to Vienna.

In ASFINAG’s rollout strategy, the RSU2X will be used in the final expansion both permanently installed on existing infrastructure and on mobile units. Initial tests on transmitter range and power consumption look promising, according to Wunderl. Over the next few years, the RSU2X is to be rolled out across the entire Austrian highway network with more than 500 units.

C-ITS will play a key role in the field of automated driving.

Patrick Wunderl is convinced that C-ITS will make a significant contribution to traffic management, especially in the future. “We see the vehicle as an extended sensor system. C-ITS establishes a direct communication channel and enables a new type of interaction between infrastructure and vehicle. For instance, we can detect congestion at an early stage and take proactive action – even away from congestion sensors installed on the infrastructure side.” Reaction times in the event of safety-relevant traffic incidents are also massively shortened because C-ITS vehicles involved in an accident can independently indicate the hazardous situation. Until now, this was only possible by means of sensors installed in the infrastructure (e. g., video detection) or by notification from third parties (e. g., police). With this intelligent interaction option between infrastructure and vehicle, Wunderl is certain that C-ITS will play a key role in the field of autonomous driving.

Communication between vehicles and infrastructure represents a major milestone in the mobility of the future. It significantly increases safety and quality of life for all citizens by, among other things, avoiding or quickly solving traffic jams and accidents. The road becomes part of the Internet of Things and gives free way to further, future-proof solutions like autonomous driving to actively improve the well-being of all of us.
