Green wave for clean air in Darmstadt

New traffic light phase assistant for Darmstadt

  • In line with the project "Darmstadt Analytics - DAnalytics", the science city of Darmstadt commissioned Yunex Traffic with the delivery and operation of a traffic light phase assistant.
  • With the app Signal2X the system provides public transport, car drivers, and cyclists with the recommended travel speed for a green wave.
  • The traffic light phase assistant effectively reduces emissions and pollution in the city.

Munich, 12 April 2022. Yunex Traffic is installing a traffic light phase assistant in the science city of Darmstadt, which generates real-time traffic data and informs road users via app about the optimal travel speed for a green wave. The measure improves the air quality in Darmstadt and thus increases the quality of life in the city.

In order to reduce pollutants and emissions and shorten travel times, the city of Darmstadt launched the "Darmstadt Analytics - DAnalytics" measure in 2018. The aim of the project funded by the BMDV is to exploit the possibilities of big data analyzes in the field of traffic management, so that road users and the environment benefit equally.

A large part of the emissions can be traced back to mobility.

“The bad air in our cities endangers our health and the environment. A large part of the emissions can be traced back to mobility. We therefore need intelligent traffic systems that no longer control traffic based on static systems, but rather orchestrate it according to the situation. Our multimodal traffic light phase assistant ensures this with smart technologies and thus forms a central element in a sustainable traffic ecosystem," says Stefan Eckert, Management of Yunex Traffic Germany.

As part of the project, smart sensors and intelligent traffic technology are installed that generate real-time traffic data and use this to develop effective traffic control measures. The components will be tested in a cooperative real-world laboratory (public transport/car/bicycle/pedestrian traffic) by autumn and then implemented throughout the city.

A central element of the overall measure is the new multimodal traffic light phase assistant, for the delivery and operation of which the science city Darmstadt commissioned Yunex Traffic as a result of a Europe-wide tender.

Via app on the green wave through the city

The traffic light phase assistant uses intelligent algorithms to calculate the optimal speed for driving on the green wave. The reliability of the prognosis is up to 99.8%. A figure of merit that accounts for current conditions and sudden events in the calculations helps assess reliability.

Drivers, cyclists, buses and trams receive the green time forecasts in real time via the “Signal2X” smartphone app, which was presented for the first time at Intertraffic 2022, the leading international trade fair for traffic technology.

The app will be available free of charge for smartphones with iOS and Android operating systems in the App Store and, for the first time in Germany, also for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In the long term, the speed recommendations should not only be available via the app, but also integrated into common navigation systems via a cloud system.

Clean air thanks to smart traffic control

If more cars, public transport, and bicycles drive on the green wave, fewer drivers have to stop and start at traffic lights. And since stop & go situations are responsible for a large part of traffic emissions, the traffic light phase assistant helps to improve air quality in cities and thus protect the environment.

In addition, the data from the traffic light phase assistant is continuously fed back to the DAnalytics analytical platform. There they are available as a database both for the central traffic computer and for traffic planning and enable environmentally sensitive traffic management.

Environmentally friendly green time forecasts: from the science city of Darmstadt to the whole world

After the kickoff in Darmstadt, Yunex Traffic plans to roll out the system in other cities and countries. With just one app, drivers and cities around the world can then benefit from the green time forecasts. The first test systems have already been installed for this purpose.

With its smart technologies such as the traffic light phase assistant, Yunex Traffic manages to encourage drivers to use transport in an environmentally sensitive manner - and to make mobility in cities more sustainable and efficient together with all players in the transport ecosystem.
