Yunex Traffic ensures cleaner air in Wiesbaden

Press release

Intelligent traffic control from Yunex Traffic ensures cleaner air in Wiesbaden, Germany

  • Yunex Traffic supports the city of Wiesbaden (GER) in the implementation of the nationwide model project "DIGI-V" ("Digitalization of Traffic in Wiesbaden")
  • Integrated traffic and environment data enables traffic to be controlled with reduced congestion and emissions
  • BMVI supports the improvement of air quality and reduction of nitrogen oxides by DIGI-V with 15 million euros

Munich, 26. November 2021. 227 converted traffic lights, 50 environmental- or weather sensors and about 400 cameras and sensors for the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden: The intelligent traffic management system from Yunex Traffic measures pollutants, such as nitrogen oxide and particulate matter, and links weather data or traffic density and recognizes traffic types such as cars, bicycles, or pedestrians. Road users receive recommendations on speed and road use via dynamic traffic signs. The result: less congestion, smoother traffic, fewer emissions. Everyone reaches their destination healthier, safer, and faster.

The vision: traffic flows smoothly, no traffic jams. Ambulances, fire brigades and buses get through the traffic quickly and without stress. Cyclists and pedestrians move safely through the city. The air remains largely clean thanks to intelligent traffic control. Yunex Traffic and the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden are now making this vision a reality in the project "Digitalization of Traffic in Wiesbaden" (DIGI-V). Until now, Wiesbaden was one of approximately 70 cities in Germany that had to reckon with diesel driving bans and other punitive measures because they regularly exceeded the nitrogen dioxide limit. This is now over because with the help of DIGI-V, Wiesbaden is becoming a more livable and climate-friendly city.

The project and the new, modern, traffic control center of the state capital Wiesbaden were presented at a moderated press conference on 25 November 2021.

Digitalized traffic means cleaner city air

Markus Schlitt, CEO of Yunex Traffic explains: "DIGI-V proves that our vision of a livable city and environmentally friendly traffic can become reality. Our solutions are driving the mobility revolution and can positively transform cities around the world."

"For Yunex Traffic, DIGI-V in Wiesbaden is a lighthouse project because it is unique in Germany and it shows how big the improvements in the transport sector can be for people and the environment. Digitalized and environmentally sensitive traffic means cleaner city air," adds Nils Schmidt, Managing Director of Yunex Traffic Germany.

Cameras record traffic types, but not road users

In Wiesbaden, all traffic lights on the main road network receive control, camera and sensor technology from Yunex Traffic. The data collected in this way is linked and evaluated. This way, route and speed recommendations can be displayed via dynamic traffic signs. Traffic is orchestrated according to the requirements of the number of road users and environmental information. For example, buses can now be given priority so that public transport users can reach their destination more quickly. And pedestrians no longer have to wait as long at traffic lights.

Data protection is important: all cameras read neither number plates nor faces. They only distinguish between basic traffic users such as bus, truck, car, bicycle or pedestrian. This is crucial for intelligent and environmentally sensitive traffic control: vehicle number and classification are the main factors influencing traffic-related emissions and are therefore the most important source of data for analytical correlations for digital traffic control.

By the way, the new system also saves energy: In the traffic lights, the illuminants are changed to 1-watt LEDs. These can be seen better – with lower power consumption at the same time.
