Reykjavik rethinks traffic management with integrated systems

Panoramic view of Reykjavík, Iceland, with colorful buildings along the waterfront and snow‑capped mountains in the background; the word ‘Reykjavik’ appears over the image.
  • Reykjavik is renewing its traffic infrastructure step by step – minimizing disruption while improving reliability in a challenging operating environment.
  • A single, integrated traffic management environment gives operators better visibility, and enables faster responses to changing traffic conditions.
  • With Yunex Traffic as a long-term partner, the city strengthens day-to-day operations through close collaboration, dedicated support, and on-site training.

Munich, 18 May 2026. Yunex Traffic is supporting the City of Reykjavik in advancing its urban traffic management through an innovation-driven collaboration focused on system modernization, integration, and operational support.

Reykjavik operates a compact but complex traffic environment with challenging weather conditions and limited operational resources. As the capital city of an island nation, Reykjavik must balance reliability, resilience, and efficiency within particularly constrained operational conditions. Yunex Traffic works closely with the city’s traffic and public transport teams to improve reliability, flexibility, and day-to-day traffic operations while preparing the network for evolving mobility needs.

A central element of the project is the modernization of Reykjavik’s existing installed base. Many traffic controllers in operation today have been running reliably for decades. By introducing new technology, the city can modernize controllers and signal infrastructure efficiently, without extensive on street work. This approach makes it possible to modernize critical infrastructure while maintaining uninterrupted daily operations. It supports gradual renewal, reduces disruption, and allows progress within short and weather dependent work windows.

Integrated traffic systems supporting daily operations

In September 2025, Reykjavik upgraded its central traffic management system to Yutraffic Symphony. The platform provides a unified operational environment from which traffic signals and intersections across the city can be monitored and coordinated. This upgrade represents an important milestone in the way traffic operations are managed on a daily basis, creating better visibility of operations and enabling faster responses to changing traffic conditions.

Building on this foundation, Reykjavik has started deploying Yutraffic FUSION, an adaptive traffic solution that adjusts signal timings based on real traffic demand instead of fixed schedules or local traffic strategies. This supports smoother traffic flow and more flexible traffic management, particularly in complex urban areas.

In parallel, Yunex Traffic is supporting exploratory initiatives around AI-enabled traffic applications and V2X use cases. These activities focus on understanding how data, connectivity, and intelligent systems can gradually enhance traffic operations while remaining fully compatible with existing infrastructure.

Clear operational benefits for daily traffic management

The collaboration focuses on practical benefits for Reykjavik’s traffic operations. Upgrade based modernization enables efficient implementation even under challenging weather conditions, reduces disruption on the street, and supports continuity of service. This is especially relevant for teams operating with limited resources and short implementation windows.

Close operational collaboration delivers additional value. Dedicated technical support for Yutraffic Symphony, extended expert availability, and on-site training activities help address capacity and knowledge constraints within the traffic organization. Direct interaction supports faster issue resolution, continuous improvement, and a more resilient operational setup.

Together, these measures support a traffic system that is easier to operate, more flexible in daily use, and better prepared for future requirements, without requiring disruptive, large scale infrastructure replacement.

A long-term partnership built on practical results

Through its work in Reykjavik, Yunex Traffic demonstrates how cities can combine innovation with pragmatic implementation. Step by step modernization, integrated systems, and close collaboration form the foundation for a resilient and future ready urban traffic network. The project in Reykjavik highlights how long-term partnership and practical innovation can go hand in hand. This is further demonstrated by the long-lasting partnership with Smith & Norland hf. as local Yunex Traffic partner in Iceland since 1979.

The ongoing project supports Reykjavik’s ambition to operate a reliable and adaptable traffic system that can evolve over time while maintaining high service quality for road users and public transport.
