Our week at the IAA Mobility 2021
Dialogues that made us smarter
We participated in this year’s IAA Mobility in Munich with one clear goal: we wanted to listen. Because it interests us what moves the citizens of Munich and other international cities. Or rather: What doesn’t move them in the truest sense of the word. Because mobility in urban structures and beyond is facing a necessary change due to rising population and increased traffic volumes.
Discussions took place at various locations in Munich. Productive, honest, comprehensible. And that was precisely our goal. On Wednesday, our CEO Markus Schlitt took on the very important question “Who needs a new mobility?” in our panel discussion at Siemens IAA Studio. Or rather, he had the opportunity to capture directly on site what other road users had to say about this from their own perspective.
Problems from the everyday lives of different people became tangible, such as those of the City of Munich’s representative for people with disabilities, Oswald Utz, or the cities school student-representative Naomi Hinkel.
In addition, our Head of Traffic Management Platform, Dr. Claus Beringer, took the chance to take our question from the first panel even further: “What does tomorrow’s mobility need?” was the topic of our second panel on Thursday at Marienplatz. We asked what the people of Munich imagine urban mobility of the future will look like.
Last but not least (and actually first), our Head of Sales & Project Executionfor Traffic Management Platform Anita Mathieu was part of the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday morning. So basically, we dedicated the last few days to listening and asking: What are the different demands of people, what do they expect from the traffic turnaround?
“Every intersection without traffic lights is a danger”
The perceptions of the current traffic situation in cities varied. It was precisely this interesting combination of different people and their individual needs that resulted in the exciting conversations we had hoped for.
So two issues were clearly in focus: safety & accessibility.
- “Every intersection without traffic lights is a danger for pedestrians and cyclists. Motorized road users need to be made aware of this, preferably through digital support.”
-School Student Representative Alexander Löher - “For a simple trip through the city, I don’t want to have to use three different apps.”
-Max Dorner, author & activist for people with disabilities - „Many elderly people and people with disabilities are anxious when it comes to urban mobility. Because the bus leaves the station too fast, the green light switches to red too fast.“

Food for thought – Our takeaways
So many authentic and meaningful insights. In our solutions for sustainable and safe traffic management, we can solve many of the above mentioned issues. But we will always be keen on learning, improving, and staying connected.
We see great added value in staying connected with all participants beyond the IAA Mobility. In addition to a nice and honest exchange, we are taking with us ideas and many issues we want to further discuss and engage with.
Because the voices of those who experience the current traffic situation on a daily basis are incredibly valuable insights. They reveal the problems that need to be solved.
