Addressing the climate crisis remains the most pressing challenge facing our global community. As the effects of climate change persist, people are both witnessing and playing a role in the degradation of our planet, leading us to the International Reducing CO2 Emissions Day, taking place annually on January 28th. The International Reducing CO2 Emissions Day is here to raise awareness and encourage people all over the world to do their part in taking care of the environment and the planet by reducing their carbon footprint. Since CO2 is such a big contributor to climate change, this day is a reminder for countries, companies, and individuals all over the world to reflect on their operations and change patterns. And it is about time.
Transport sector remains one of the biggest contributors to global emissions
The year 2023, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), etched its place in history as the hottest year ever recorded. Global emissions must decrease by 7 percent annually until 2030 to retain any chance of limiting global warming below 1.5°C by the end of this century, the World Economic Forum says in its recent The State of Climate Action report. In the past millennium, fossil fuel usage has released billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Fossil fuels, which are still dominating around 80 percent of the global energy supply, are the leading cause of global warming and cast a threatening shadow over our planet’s future. In large parts, motorized transport remains dependent on engines that generally run on fossil fuel. That results in the transport sector being still one of the largest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. Approximately 25 percent of global CO2 emissions can be attributed to the transport sector.
As a company operating in the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) industry, we face these uncomfortable facts, accept our substantial responsibility, and act. And we don´t just talk, we do.
How we reduce CO2 emissions
To reduce CO2 emissions effectively, it’s crucial for us to openly acknowledge all the areas where our business is responsible for generating emissions, whether directly or indirectly. For example, we consider the emissions from our offices, our factory and depots, and our fleet. We also reflect on the emissions caused by working with suppliers, for example through the purchase of materials, the transportation of goods and services, and business travel. Furthermore, we delve into the entire value chain connected to the products and solutions we provide to our customers. This includes assessing the energy consumed during their use and their end-of-life management. By addressing these various facets, we aim to provide a comprehensive picture of our environmental impact. And this is how we act:
#1 Reducing emissions of our business operations at Yunex Traffic
We aim to be net zero across our own operations by 2040. First, we are currently adjusting how we use our office space to cut energy use by 25% before 2026, thanks to a more flexible work setup. To address the environmental impact of our vehicles, we’re shifting half of our fleet (700 vehicles) to electric and alternative fuels by 2030. We’re also working towards using 90% renewable electricity in our facilities by 2030, aiming to switch to cleaner energy wherever possible. Plus, we prioritize training our employees in energy-saving practices and encourage them to avoid wasting energy whenever possible, such as in ventilation or heating behavior.
In 2023, for example, we proudly powered our Prague office, located in the Scott.Weber Workspace, with 100% renewable electricity. Certified by Pražská energetika, a. s. (PRE), our energy supply carries the prestigious guarantee of origin from renewable resources within the member countries of the Association of Issuing Bodies. The office space offers flexibility to meet our dynamic needs. Whether we need to adjust space for team expansion or optimize the use of meeting rooms, our setup adapts seamlessly. Shared amenities, such as kitchens and reception, foster a collaborative environment with other tenants. Examples like these show the direction we’re heading next. There’s still a lot to do, but we’re on it!
#2 Reducing the emissions of our Supply Chain
Only together can we navigate the path toward sustainability. Therefore, we are not just focused on reducing our own emissions but also those produced in the course of our collaboration with our suppliers. At Yunex Traffic, we provide cities, highway authorities, and mobility operators with the largest portfolio of end-to-end intelligent traffic management solutions. This extensive range of products naturally entails collaborating with numerous suppliers.
We aim to reach net zero emissions of our supply chain by 2050. On this journey to net zero, we have established intermediate targets, making sure we drive change as quickly and efficiently as possible. For us, sustainability in the supply chain means creating long-term added value with excellent and innovative suppliers – while acting in an economically, ecologically, compliant, and socially responsible manner. To ensure this, we work closely with our suppliers to gather transparent ESG disclosures, allowing for a thorough evaluation of their environmental impact. By providing guidance and resources, we aim to create a collaborative ecosystem committed to sustainable practices, and we actively encourage our suppliers to set absolute reduction targets themselves.
#3 Reducing the emissions of our products and solutions
The deployment of urban infrastructure, including traffic lights and operational traffic management systems, contributes to CO2 emissions. These emissions are not only associated with the production phase but also emerge during the operational lifespan of our products and solutions. This is where we want to make a difference. We are committed to achieving Net Zero emissions across our entire portfolio of products and solutions by 2050. By 2030, we aim to achieve an absolute CO2 reduction of 12% across our portfolio.
A pivotal focus is on optimizing solutions for reduced environmental impact. A significant technological shift towards 1-watt and next-generation traffic signals holds promise in significantly lowering emissions. We emphasize continuous improvement, particularly in data center optimization, where we streamline processor needs and leverage cloud storage to reduce energy consumption across multiple centers. Additionally, our global factory is dedicated to responsible material use, aiming to eliminate non-recyclable waste. We prioritize recyclable and reusable materials, incorporating better design practices as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for most of the equipment we install.
#4 Supporting our customers on their journey of traffic emission reduction
As urban populations continue to grow, the demand for smarter cities, including smart mobility solutions, is now at the forefront of urban areas worldwide. And we are here to support this paradigm shift. With our GoGreen portfolio, for example, we offer a wide range of customized sustainable traffic management solutions to help our customers transform mobility, whether in urban areas or on the highways. The solutions provided in this portfolio help cities and traffic operators minimize the environmental damage and air pollution caused by road traffic and preserve the quality of life in our cities for generations to come. We offer solutions to save energy, strengthen sustainable modes of transport, reduce emissions and improve air quality.
And our customers have already implemented solutions for traffic emission reduction. In the German city Wiesbaden, for example, the Environmental Traffic Management System (ETM), one of our GoGreen solutions, is making a positive impact by integrating air quality measurements, detecting pollutants, and analyzing weather and traffic data. This system helps forecast traffic patterns, allowing operators to proactively prevent congestion and pollution hotspots. Road users receive dynamic recommendations for speed and road use, resulting in less congestion, smoother traffic, and therefore traffic emission reduction, promoting healthier, safer, and faster journeys. Meanwhile, the German city of Bietigheim-Bissingen has successfully implemented sustainable traffic control since 1998, saving approximately 1,277 tons of CO2 through energy-efficient LED technology. This conversion not only emphasizes sustainability but also yields significant electricity and cost savings. Additionally, collaboration with the IT services of Wallonia’s transport operator in Belgium has led to the implementation of a digital prioritization system for public transport, aiming to reduce operational costs and improve travel times, supporting the region’s mission to enhance public transport attractiveness. In Peachtree Corners, GA, United States, we have been entrusted to install, design, and maintain new electric vehicle charging stations in a bustling social area, contributing to the city’s goal of upgrading technology and ensuring smooth operations.
