Yunex Traffic ensures safety in and around Hamburg’s Elbe Tunnel

Installation of a new traffic sign bridge on the A7 in Hamburg
- Yunex Traffic digitizes traffic control on the A7 in Hamburg with intelligent traffic signs and connected traffic sensors.
- The technical installations control the flow of traffic in and around the tunnel and increase road safety.
- The current project is part of a refurbishment of the traffic technology on the A7 in Hamburg.
Munich, February 28th, 2022 – Yunex Traffic installed a new traffic sign bridge on the A7 in Hamburg. The measure is an important milestone in the expansion of the highway to eight lanes in order to improve traffic flow and thus increase driver safety in and around the Elbe Tunnel.
More than 150,000 vehicles pass the A7 in Hamburg every day – and the trend is rising. The increasing traffic not only leads to traffic jams, but also entails safety risks. To prevent this, the highway operator “Die Autobahn GmbH” launched an extensive renovation project on the A7.
Within this project, the traffic technology on the city highway will be optimized, digitized, and connected in 18 construction phases. Yunex Traffic, market leader in intelligent traffic systems, was commissioned to develop and install the traffic systems.
“Especially in and around tunnels, the flow of traffic is fundamental, since the smallest disruption can quickly become dangerous – especially in a highly frequented area like the A7 in Hamburg. Our current project at the Elbe Tunnel shows how we can use our diverse end-to-end portfolio to eliminate a wide variety of sources of danger before they arise, making roads and cities safer and therefore more livable,” says Yunex Traffic CEO Markus Schlitt.
New update of the traffic computer improves traffic control
The core of the measure in the project around the Elbe Tunnel is the installation of an intelligent traffic sign bridge, that enables flexible reactions to traffic developments and thus regulates the flow of traffic while enabling maximum safety.
For this purpose, Yunex Traffic installed intelligent sensors on the highway. These record traffic and environmental data and forward it to the traffic computer. Equipped with the Yunex Traffic Software Yutraffic Conduct, the computer evaluates the data gathered and forwards corresponding reactions to the traffic sign bridge.
In line with the project, the traffic calculator also received an update so that it is perfectly aligned with the new signal system. All possible incidents such as accidents, weather changes or increased traffic are then already pre-programmed in the traffic computer. This ensures continuous tunnel operation.

The traffic sign bridge lays the foundation for the next milestone in the expansion of the A7 to eight lanes
At the end of 2023, Yunex Traffic will install a 150-metre-long median transfer system on the A7. The moveable metal barriers allow flexible blocking of individual road sections or tunnel tubes.
Despite disruptions, traffic can be dynamically diverted by the tunnel operator and continue to flow quickly. This ensures that accidents in the tunnel are secured quickly and safely at all times and that there is no danger to other road users.
The new traffic signs also provide another benefit: Equipped with new LED technology, they save up to 90% of the energy used to illuminate the signs while the visibility is much higher. One more advantage that will soon make the A7 in and around Hamburg much safer – for drivers and the environment.
