Yunex Traffic brings adaptive traffic control to 400 intersections across Belgrade
- Yunex Traffic’s adaptive traffic control system is now fully operational across around 400 intersections in Belgrade, Serbia.
- Public transport priority for 160 trams and 20 buses helps make urban mobility more efficient and reliable.
- Improved pedestrian accessibility and safety through 1,300 acoustic pedestrian push buttons support safer crossings for all road users, including blind and visually impaired people.
Belgrade, 28 September 2026. Yunex Traffic has successfully completed the implementation of Belgrade’s Adaptive Traffic Control System, one of the most ambitious urban mobility modernization projects in the region. The new central traffic control system now monitors and manages traffic operations across around 400 intersections in Belgrade, enabling both citywide adaptive traffic control and local traffic-actuated operation where appropriate. It helps improve traffic flow, enhance public transport, reduce energy consumption, and create a more sustainable and efficient transportation network for the Serbian capital.
Belgrade has reached a major milestone on its journey toward smarter and more sustainable mobility. With the delivery of Yunex Traffic’s fully operational urban traffic management solution, the City of Belgrade Traffic Department can now dynamically respond to traffic conditions across the city. The Adaptive Traffic Control System combines advanced traffic management technologies with modern traffic signal infrastructure and improves traffic flow, enhances reliability, and supports public transport operations.
Making better use of existing road infrastructure
The project was designed to help Belgrade make better use of its existing road infrastructure while addressing growing mobility demands. By continuously adapting signal timings based on real-time traffic conditions, the system helps reduce congestion, minimize stops, and improve travel times for road users. With the help of various Yunex Traffic technologies, the new intelligent traffic ecosystem enables the city to manage traffic more effectively while reducing operational complexity.
Improving efficiency for public transport and the environment
A key element of the project is public transport priority, which has been implemented for 160 trams and 20 buses. By giving priority at intersections, the system helps public transport vehicles move through the city more efficiently, supporting more reliable and attractive public transportation services.
In addition to improving traffic flow and public transport operations, the project significantly enhances pedestrian safety and accessibility. Around 1,300 pedestrian push buttons equipped with acoustic signals have been installed throughout the city, supporting safer crossings for all road users, particularly blind and visually impaired people. This makes the mobility network more inclusive while improving everyday journeys for thousands of pedestrians.
The modernization also contributes to sustainability goals. The introduction of low-energy signal technology lowers power consumption, while improved traffic flow helps avoid unnecessary stops and vehicle idling, reducing emissions and noise pollution. In addition, modern equipment is expected to reduce maintenance effort and operational costs over the long term.
A blueprint for future mobility projects
The successful completion of the project reflects the close cooperation between teams from Yunex Traffic in Serbia, Austria, and Germany. Beyond its local impact, the Belgrade project serves as an important reference for future adaptive traffic management deployments in Serbia and neighboring countries. The project also helped establish additional traffic engineering and systems expertise within the region, creating a strong foundation for future growth and innovation.
“This project demonstrates how international expertise, local knowledge, and strong collaboration can come together to create lasting value for cities and their residents. We are proud to support Belgrade in building a more efficient, sustainable, and future-ready mobility network”, said Vesna Vlahovic, Managing Director at Yunex Traffic Serbia.
With the system now fully operational, Belgrade joins a growing number of cities worldwide that are using intelligent mobility technology to improve everyday journeys, make better use of existing infrastructure, and support more sustainable urban development.
