Public EV Charging: Unreliable Today, But Fixable for Tomorrow

Yunex Traffic EV Services

As the world embraces electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce carbon emissions, one persistent obstacle remains: the availability and reliability of public charging stations. According to recent studies, public EV charging infrastructure is still riddled with issues, making it unreliable and frustrating for many users. As a result, most EV owners opt to charge their vehicles at home, as highlighted in the Global EV Outlook 2024 by IEA.

Public Charging Challenges Worldwide

In the United States, for example, recent studies by Harvard Business School and J.D. Power indicate that every 5th public charging process fails with out-of-service chargers being the most common problem. A fragmented ownership structure, where site hosts neglect maintenance after warranties expire, is a further driver for these issues.

In Europe, EcoG, a Munich based tech company, reported that charging reliability in Germany was only 68% across ten tested EV models. Connectivity problems and unclear plug-locking statuses were among the primary concerns. In Germany, the government is already aware of these challenges. As a result, the federal government has supported a project where businesses and research institutions collaborated to create a set of measures and quality standards for charge point manufacturers and operators. Key quality criteria include standardized QR codes for unified access and 24-hour service hotlines. This highlights that the issues of public charging are similar worldwide: there is a lack of adequate service, maintenance, and connectivity for charging systems.

Key Issues Facing Global EV Charging Infrastructure

The studies reveal that across different continents the main challenges of EV public charging reliability remain similar:

  • Out-of-service chargers due to vandalism, damage, or poor maintenance.
  • Poor maintenance and a lack of available service hotlines.
  • Real-time data inaccuracies leading to confusion about charger availability.
  • Network failures that prevent chargers from communicating with certain EV models.
  • Payment system malfunctions, often requiring multiple apps to complete transactions.

Our #TeamYunexTraffic conducted a self-test: Is Public Charging as Problematic as It Seems?

Recognizing these challenges, our #TeamYunexTraffic conducted a self-test to explore if public charging reliability is as problematic as it seems. We asked our colleagues around the world to test public charging stations and share their experiences in a survey with us. Despite the non-representative number of participants and amount of charging processes, the results still revealed a similar sentiment across regions, highlighting that the challenges with reliability and connectivity are a global issue. The key findings included:

  • One-third of respondents encountered issues while charging, with communication failures accounting for nearly half of these problems.
  • Over 25% could not charge due to all chargers being occupied.
  • Several respondents experienced power-related issues, either with no power at the station or reduced charging speeds.
  • Payment difficulties were also reported, with some users needing to download new apps to complete the transaction.

Despite these challenges, most respondents were ultimately able to charge their vehicles after trying alternative stations or waiting, indicating that while the system faces challenges, it is functional to some extent.

How we can help fix EV charging reliability

As the recent surveys and the exploration of our colleagues underline: Public EV charging is still unreliable today. However, our #TeamYunexTraffic offers a wide service portfolio to fix the EV charging reliability and improve the charging experience of users.

  1. Comprehensive Maintenance and Support: We provide a holistic range of services, from on-site repairs to remote infrastructure monitoring. By identifying issues early and responding swiftly, our #TeamYunexTraffic ensures that charging stations are kept in working order and that maintenance is predictive and proactive rather than reactive.
  1. Enhanced Communication Systems: Communication breakdowns between chargers and vehicles are a common issue. We help identify and deploy the best communication providers for charging hardware, ensuring robust and redundant networking capabilities. This reduces the chances of failures due to network connectivity issues, network security and increases the reliability of the stations.
  1. Infrastructure Design and Expansion: Our team specializes in the design, installation, and project management of charging infrastructure. They consider future scalability, allowing customers to expand their charging capabilities with minimal disruption. This forward-thinking approach ensures that as the demand for EVs grows, infrastructure can be adapted without starting from scratch.
  1. Power Management and Upgrades: For sites facing power limitations, we offer power upgrades and local electricity storage solutions. These measures ensure that charging stations can deliver the necessary power, maximizing the output and reducing downtime.
  1. Rapid Response in Rural Areas: Maintaining rural charging stations can be particularly challenging due to longer response times. However, our extensive network of depots and service locations ensures rapid response times – sometimes as low as four hours – even in more remote areas. This helps minimize downtime and ensures EV drivers can rely on public charging no matter where they are.

Act Today for a Greener Tomorrow: Let´s bring EV Charging to the next level

Our solutions are not only focused on fixing current issues but also on building a sustainable and reliable infrastructure for the future. By addressing communication breakdowns, streamlining power management, and ensuring rapid maintenance responses, our team plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall public EV charging experience.

With a focus on innovation and reliability, we are helping to pave the way for a more robust public charging network that can keep pace with the growing EV market.
