Focus on sustainability: Improving production processes with our partner Astute Electronics
In our continuous efforts to enhance sustainability and efficiency, we encountered a significant issue in our production process for several detection devices. This case study outlines the problem we faced, the innovative solution we implemented, and the positive results achieved.
The Challenge: Standardized Cables were not flexible enough
Our company uses a lot of different cables for various products in different lengths. These cables are costly due to their unique composition and the expensive connectors at both ends. Occasionally, customers require lengths that we do not stock. For instance, our minimum length of 5 meters was 2 meters longer than what some customers needed. The workaround involved taking a 5-meter cable from our inventory and cutting it in half, resulting in wastage of part of the cable and an expensive connector, which became unusable due to its molded design.
A line worker who was responsible for cutting the cables noticed this wastage and suggested that we could find a way to eliminate it. The line manager agreed and brought the issue to the attention of our procurement team.
The Answer: Cooperation with Astute Electronics Limited
The procurement team analyzed the volumes and realized that without a solution, we would end up cutting over 1,300 five-meter cables. Prompt action was necessary. They collaborated with the engineering team to create a drawing of the required cable length and consulted with our manufacturer, Astute Electronics Limited, to explore possible solutions. Astute Electronics quickly responded with a new quotation and a sample for approval, recognizing the benefits of reducing the cable length and removing the connector from both an efficiency and environmental standpoint.
The Benefits: 8.4% cost savings
The new cable design resulted in an 8.4% cost saving per unit, reducing overall expenditure by €11,000. This case demonstrates that focusing on sustainability and waste reduction does not necessarily increase business costs. On the contrary, it can lead to significant savings in both the short and long term. This success story highlights the effective collaboration between our internal teams and our supply chain, showcasing our commitment to sustainable practices.
Conclusion: Small changes, big impact
This case study illustrates how a simple observation by a line worker led to a significant improvement in our production process. By addressing the issue of cable wastage, we not only achieved cost savings but also reinforced our commitment to sustainability. This example underscores the importance of listening to employees at all levels and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and environmental responsibility.
