Fehmarnsund Tunnel: Consortium Builds Europe’s New North–South Corridor
- The Fehmarnsund Crossing is a key infrastructure project that connects the German mainland with the island of Fehmarn and forms part of the Fehmarnbelt project, linking Scandinavia and Central Europe by road and rail.
- The consortium of DEPENBROCK, KEMNA and Yunex Traffic contributes its expertise in civil engineering and intelligent traffic technology to deliver the Fehmarnsund Tunnel.
- Yunex Traffic provides state-of-the-art traffic, safety, and communication systems to enable intelligent 24/7 tunnel operations.
Stemwede / Pinneberg / Munich, 3 December 2025. DB InfraGo commissions a consortium of DEPENBROCK, KEMNA and Yunex Traffic for road construction and traffic technology in the Fehmarnsund Tunnel. The project creates a vital link between Germany and Denmark, forming a key part of Europe’s new north-south transport corridor. Yunex Traffic will deliver intelligent traffic, safety, and communication systems for connected 24/7 tunnel operations.
A Key Link for Europe’s Future Mobility
DB InfraGo has awarded a consortium of DEPENBROCK, KEMNA and Yunex Traffic the contract for road infrastructure works in the Fehmarnsund Tunnel and its connecting road network. Signed on 21 November 2025, the contract covers road construction as well as operational, traffic, and telecommunication systems for the road section. The Fehmarnsund Tunnel plays a pivotal role in the European Fehmarnbelt Crossing project. As a combined road and rail tunnel, it will connect Fehmarn to the Schleswig-Holstein mainland, while the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel links the island to Denmark. Together, these crossings will expand road and rail capacity, enabling fast, seamless, and weather-independent transport of goods between major European hubs and ports. In fact, this creates a continuous economic area stretching from Scandinavia to Southern Europe.
Future-Ready Traffic and Safety Technology
Yunex Traffic will deliver the complete technical equipment for the road section of the Fehmarnsund Crossing. This includes operational, traffic, and telecommunication systems for the new road tunnel and the B 207 highway. These systems will ensure maximum safety and efficient traffic management on one of Europe’s most important north-south corridors. The scope covers full safety equipment for the tunnel according to RE-ING 2023, bidirectional traffic data collection, dynamic LED matrix displays, gantries with traffic signs, as well as emergency call and video surveillance systems. All systems will be integrated into the Hamburg tunnel control center, enabling connected 24/7 operations.
“The Fehmarnsund Crossing is a key project for the European transport corridor. With state-of-the-art technology, we enable safe and intelligent operation of the new road tunnel. This creates a future-ready link between Germany and Denmark that improves mobility, optimizes traffic flow and strengthens infrastructure for generations to come,” says Nils Schmidt, Managing Director at Yunex Traffic Germany.
Comprehensive Road Construction Works
DEPENBROCK will take the technical lead within the consortium, while DEPENBROCK and KEMNA will jointly manage all road construction tasks in this package. This includes building the new alignment of the B 207 highway both inside the tunnel and in the open section, as well as necessary diversions, connections to secondary roads and the construction of roundabouts. Inside the tunnel, works will start from the tunnel sealing and include the full road structure. Outside the tunnel, all layers of the road body – including gravel base layers – will be installed. Additional civil engineering works and drainage systems will also be provided.
“Over the past years, we’ve contributed our expertise to the success of major German infrastructure projects. Being part of creating a cross-border logistics axis that opens economic opportunities on a European scale is both an honor and a mission for us,” says Dipl.-Ing. Karl-Heinrich Depenbrock, Managing Partner of the DEPENBROCK Group.
“This is an outstanding German-Danish collaboration and a flagship project for Northern Europe. As a company based in Schleswig-Holstein, we at KEMNA are proud to contribute to connecting Germany and Denmark together with our partners Depenbrock and Yunex Traffic. What’s especially exciting is that this contract model allows us to bring in our experience and expertise early on – driving innovation together,” adds KEMNA Managing Director Jacob Andreae.
With this milestone, the consortium sets a benchmark for cross-border collaboration and future-ready infrastructure, paving the way for safer, smarter, and more sustainable mobility across Europe.
