Ensuring Safety in Connected Mobility: Yunex Traffic obtains First-Ever EU Trust Level 1 Evaluation for its Roadside Units (RSUs)
  • The Roadside Units (RSUs) manufactured by Yunex Traffic are first to obtain Level 1 Trust Evaluation under the European Certificate Policy (EU CP) issued by TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH, an independent evaluation facility from Germany.
  • The European Certificate Policy (EU CP) sets common security and trust standards for communication among vehicles, infrastructure, and traffic management entities. The Level 1 Trust Evaluation is a mandatory requirement for productive Cooperative Intelligent Transport systems (C-ITS) in the EU.
  • RSUs play a central role in enabling communication between vehicles and infrastructure (V2X), enabling real-time traffic management and hazard warnings to increase safety. Road authorities and cities deploying Yunex Traffic RSUs rely on a future-proof system that is compatible with series production vehicles.

Munich, March 11, 2024. Yunex Traffic has achieved the Level 1 evaluation for its Roadside Units (RSUs) under the European Certificate Policy (EU CP). After two years of testing and evaluation, Yunex Traffic’s Roadside Units (RSUs) have successfully passed the evaluation process performed by TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH. This achievement confirms compliance with the strict EU security standards for C-ITS and is a testament to Yunex Traffic´s leadership position.

Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) aim to enhance traffic safety. To ensure trust in C-ITS communication, a binding framework called the European Certificate Policy (EU CP) was developed, defining common rules and roles for participants in the European Union. The evaluation was carried out in co-operation with ASFINAG as part of the Austrian C-ITS implementation project – the first and biggest productive C-ITS deployment in Europe. It involves thorough testing and evaluation of the RSU communication units to ensure their adherence to the European Certificate Policy (EU CP) and compliance with Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) standards.

Yunex Traffic’s RSUs comply with stringent EU security guidelines

RSUs play a central role in enabling communication between vehicles and infrastructure (V2X), enabling real-time traffic management and hazard warnings to increase safety on the roads. The RSUs of Yunex Traffic are now officially testified to meet the security requirements of the EU CP that include dedicated requirements for the authentication process and security of the communication channels to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of transmitted data.

“Our RSUs are designed to meet the evolving needs of the transportation industry while maintaining the highest standards of cybersecurity”, says Michael Venus, Head of Product Management for Urban Intelligent Traffic Systems at Yunex Traffic. “We are proud to be at the forefront of driving innovation and safety in the connected mobility systems.”

Secure and reliable RSUs are crucial pillars of smart, connected urban mobility

RSUs facilitate communication between vehicles and infrastructure (V2X), enabling functions like real-time traffic management and hazard warnings. However, RSUs are a potential target for cybersecurity threats such as unauthorized access and data tampering.

“As our mobility becomes increasingly intelligent and interconnected, it’s crucial to mitigate risks and maintain robust security measures for critical infrastructure, including encryption and access control. Our attainment of the level 1 evaluation conformant to the EU CP security policy underscores our dedication to enhance road safety and bolstering the overall resilience of traffic management systems,” Michael Venus adds.
