5 questions, 5 answers: How to exploit data & digitalization in mobility management?

Dominic Berges explains how to exploit data in traffic management

The mobility sector is undergoing a rapid digital transformation, generating vast amounts of real-time data. To fully utilize the potential agencies and mobility operators must ensure robust cybersecurity, exploit data and integrate emerging technologies like AI and digital twins. We asked Dominic Berges, Product Lifecycle Manager at Yunex Traffic, how agencies can unlock the full potential of data and digitalization to create more intelligent, efficient, and more secure transport systems.

Dominic, how do you see the future of mobility evolving with the rise of connected and data-driven technologies?

The future of mobility is undeniably becoming more connected, intelligent, and data-driven. As technologies like AI, real-time data, and digital twins continue to develop, they will revolutionize the way we manage and optimize transport systems. Real-time data helps make better, more informed decisions by providing immediate feedback on traffic patterns, incidents, and road conditions. Digital twin models create virtual models of transport networks that simulate real-world scenarios, enhancing our ability to optimize traffic flows and AI-enabled solutions can help improve current detection mechanisms and ultimately help to improve road safety.

These advancements will not only make mobility more efficient but will also contribute to more sustainable traffic management by reducing emissions, improving resource allocation, and enhancing overall system performance. Ultimately, these technologies will create smarter, more adaptive systems that cater to the changing needs of mobility.

What are the key challenges mobility operators face in this digital transformation?

There are several significant challenges that mobility operators must address to fully leverage the potential of digital transformation. The first is data fragmentation. Mobility systems generate enormous amounts of data, but much of this data remains untapped because it is scattered across different systems and platforms.

The lack of interoperability between these systems often results in missed opportunities for collaboration and deeper insights. Secondly, as transportation systems become increasingly connected, the risks associated with cybersecurity grow. Cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure are on the rise and ensuring that mobility systems are secure has never been more important. Lastly, the siloed nature of many existing mobility systems limits the ability to integrate and share data across agencies and service providers. There’s a clear need for more integrated platforms that can allow various systems – whether they’re managing traffic, parking, or public transportation – to communicate and share insights in real-time.

How does Yunex Traffic help cities and mobility operators exploit data?

At Yunex Traffic, we offer mobility management platforms that can integrate previously isolated systems and harness the full potential of data. Our approach is centered around data integration, which enables better communication and coordination across different agencies, cities, and service providers. Our traffic management platform offers real-time insights that help agencies make smarter decisions, whether it’s optimizing traffic flows or responding to incidents faster.

We also design systems with cybersecurity in mind, implementing security by design to ensure the protection of critical infrastructure from the outset. By focusing on system flexibility and scalability, we empower cities to adapt quickly to changing needs – whether it’s managing more connected vehicles, complying with new regulations, or addressing evolving urban demands. Through our collaboration with Aimsun and VMZ, we offer cutting-edge tools for predictive modeling and data analytics that help cities optimize their transportation networks and improve the overall efficiency of their operations.

What role do strong partnerships play in advancing digital mobility solutions?

Strong partnerships are essential to driving progress in the field of digital mobility. At Yunex Traffic, we recognize that no single company can address the full spectrum of challenges in this rapidly evolving space on its own. Together with our partners, we are able to provide cities and mobility operators with a holistic suite of solutions that cover everything from system integration and data analysis to predictive modeling and multimodal transportation.

Aimsun, for example, brings valuable expertise in transport simulation and predictive analytics, helping cities better understand traffic flows and plan for future demands. VMZ complements this by providing multimodal mobility solutions and citizen dashboards that not only improve connectivity between transportation modes but also promote transparency and citizen involvement in mobility planning. These and partnerships with local companies allow us to offer end-to-end support, ensuring that cities have the necessary tools, technologies, and expertise to build the future of transportation.

What key developments do you see shaping the future of mobility in the coming years?

Looking ahead, several key developments are set to shape the future of mobility. One of the most significant trends is the growing demand for scalable cloud infrastructure that can handle the massive amounts of data generated by connected vehicles and smart cities. As mobility becomes increasingly data-driven, the need for flexible computing power will only continue to rise. Cybersecurity will also remain a focal point as connected systems become more complex and widespread. Ensuring that these systems are secure and resilient will be critical to their success. Another trend we’re observing is the increasing pressure on governments and regulatory bodies to encourage data sharing.

Policies like open data initiatives are pushing cities and transportation providers to make their data more accessible, which in turn supports innovation and allows for more collaborative solutions. Lastly, we expect to see a continued rise in the integration of emerging technologies like AI, digital twins, and predictive analytics, all of which will play a central role in making transportation systems more efficient, safe, and sustainable. By leveraging these advancements, we can create truly intelligent mobility ecosystems that can better serve the needs of both citizens and mobility operators.
